The makers of Auvi-Q (Allerject in Canada) have released a new auto-injector, EVZIO. EVZIO has the same voice instructions as the Auvi-Q but contains naloxone, a drug meant for opioid (prescription painkiller) overdose, and should not be used for the treatment of anaphylaxis. Opioid addictions are a disease just like food allergies and are just as deadly. Opioid overdoses can also have other causes unrelated to addictions. But, with this new auto-injector comes hazards for the food allergy community. It's important that caregivers are trained to know the differences between naloxone and epinephrine so that if seen in another person's possession or in an ambulance, EVZIO is not used in the place of epinephrine. Take a few minutes to educate yourself about both devices - you could save a life.
The distinction between the three devices is the color: EVZIO is purple/yellow, Auvi-Q Junior is blue, and Auvi-Q is orange. EVZIO and Auvi-Qs are used in the same way and do not put the patient at major risk if used unnecessarily. Both should be stored at room temperature and must be examined regularly for discoloration or particles in the solution. Ask a healthcare provider for more information, or if you would like to use trainers for either device.
